10 cubic feet

Doorstep box

Fifteen inches deep, thirty-four wide, three feet tall. It stands against a wall by a door and takes the things you reach for without going anywhere: a watering can, gloves, a bag of feed, the recycling.

26 to 37 cubic feet

Low and wide

Under fifty inches, so it clears a window sill and a deck rail. Between 26 and 37 cubic feet, opened from the front or the top, and the class that takes two wheeled bins.

48 to 57 cubic feet

Tall cabinet

Chest to head height, 48 to 57 cubic feet, with front doors wide enough to roll a push mower through. This is where long-handled tools stand up instead of lying down.

6 by 4 to 6 by 11 feet

Walk-in

Six feet deep and four, six or eleven along the wall. You walk into these rather than reaching in, which changes what matters: a level pad, doors that clear the fence, anchors, and a look at the local rules.

Deck boxes are measured differently

A deck box is sold in gallons rather than cubic feet, because it is bought for what it swallows rather than what it stands on: 33 gallons for two cushions or a set of pool toys, 100 and 110 gallons for a full set of four seat and back cushions without folding them. The large boxes are 46 inches along the front and 24 deep, which is the measurement to take to the deck.
